"Untitled"

This is an original 1976 six-color lithograph of a piece by Spanish Catalan artist, Joan Miró created especially for this portfolio. Although he is most commonly noted for his surrealist style, Miro preferred not to think of himself as a surrealist. Many of his pieces resulted from his unraveling of the automatic drawing style he had previously learned, instead substituting it with lines and colors which seem to tap into the subconscious, whimsical nature one might see of a child; all the while protesting and contradicting previous ideals of what a true painter and artist really was. This particular piece falls more within the realm of his more abstract pieces. Please note that the center crease is original and that there is a small blemish above the yellow and red circle.

Joan Miro

Joan Miro (1893-1983) is a Spanish Catalan artist known for his exuberant and child-like art. Although his work is difficult to place within a particular artistic movement of the time, it is most often associated with Surrealism and Dadaism. His experimental style and pride in his Catalan heritage were huge influences, and although the Spanish Civil War and World War II were two major upheavals over the course of his career, he succeeded in guiding his work away from political state for many years until The Reaper, a politically charged mural that was on display in the Spanish Republican Pavilion during 1937 Paris Exhibition.
