The title "Duke of Lennox" was originally created in the Peerage of Scotland for the Steward of Darnley Clan. It is named for Lennox, a district in Stirling, and was originally established in 1580/81. Esme Steward, First Earl of Lennox was created Earl of Darnley at the same time. Pictured is the Lennox family at the Darnley cenotaph, an "empty tomb" or monument constructed in honor of the Earl of Darnley. The family is shown in pious prayer, surrounded by iconography pertaining to the life of the Earl of Darnley.
