This is an original 1910 halftone print of the shellmound located on the south bank of San Pablo Creek, which, at the time, had already been cultivated for over fifty years. The second image shows the Ellis Landing Shellmound near Richmond, California.

A shellmound or midden is a wasteland used by previous human settlements, which accumulated with domestic waste containing shells, animal bones, human excrement, vermin and other ecological and human waste products. These pits were originally created by nomadic groups, who generally utilized the disposal area a single time before moving on. However, sedentary communities would use the dumps for extended periods of time.
