1896 Wood Engraving Gaston Vuillier Ibiza Joc Gall Chicken Game XGJB9

This is an original 1896 black and white wood engraving which, at first glance, one might find extremely puzzling. This is the Joc del Gall, or Game of the Cock, in which young men from Santa Eulalia, Ibiza, string a chicken up into a tree and take turns attempting to cut it down with a rusty old sword. Naturally, it was played for profit, with each miss costing the player some small inconsequential sum.
