1875 Woodcut Chateau Marly Louis XIV View Entrance 17th Century France XEA6

This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut which depicts the Château de Marly in France. It was here that King Louis XIV would escape to in order to avoid the formalities and gilded cage he was creating at Versailles. As it contained fewer rooms, it was more informal and required simplified protocols than what he had established for his courtiers, the perfect retreat in other words. Today, very little remains of the castle as it was demolished in the early 1800s.
