Started in 1177, the 920 meter bridge features 22 arches and was 4 meters wide. At the time of its completion eight years later, it was an imposing structure considered a marvel, providing the only crossing over the Rhône River between Lyon and the Mediterranean and attracting merchants and manufacturers, substantially contributing to the development of the city.
