This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the Puebloan cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde, Colorado. The cliff dwelling shown, named Cliff Palace, is one of several in the area. The cliff dwellings are some of the best-preserved in the entire world, and were built into the cliff face for protection from the elements. As a general rule, the deeper into the cliff face, the older the architecture, as this area was built over hundreds of years. Evidence from around the area suggests that construction of the dwellings began in 550 AD. The caption to this image writes, "This wonderful ruin is 300 feet long and is estimated to have contained 200 rooms. It is built of cut stone held together with very enduring mortar."
