This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of a waterfall of the Yellowstone River at Yellowstone National Park. The park was established in 1872, and is located in Wyoming, although a few sections to extend into Idaho and Montana. Yellowstone was the first national park of the world, and is known for its geysers, and massive caldera. The location of the caldera, or opening of the volcano, could not be located until the 1960s. NASA was trying out high-altitude cameras at the time and took images of the region. A geologist saw the photographs, and realized that the reason the caldera had not been found was because the opening encompassed the entire national park-- all 2.2 million acres of it, which makes Yellowstone the largest active volcano in the entire world. Geologists estimate that Yellowstone has a large eruption once ever 600,000 years. The last large eruption occurred 630,000 years ago.
