This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of France's tribute to her unknown soldier. Shown is a mass of flags, General Pershing pinning the Congressional Medal of Honor at the foot of the French hero's grave, and the procession to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France (Republique Fran&3231;aise). The caption for the bottom image writes, "Procession passing the Chamber of Deputies escorting the body of the unknown poilu on its way to the place of burial in the Arc de Triomphe. The streets were thronged with spectators and the people were stirred with deep emotion. It was really a double celebration, for, besides the burial of the unknown hero of the late war, the French people celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the republic, and to emphasize the occasion buried with elaborate ceremonies the heart of Gambetta, the fiery orator and ardent patriot of the Franco-Prussian War, 1870-1871."
