This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the sinking of surrendered German ships at Scapa Flow. Scapa Flow is the surrounding water body of the Orkney Islands of Scotland, United Kingdom. The caption to the bottom image writes, "One of the German destroyers at Scapa Flow that had drifted on top of a sunken vessel and rested there. Some of these were salvaged, but all the larger vessels sank. The hoisting of a red flag at noon was the signal for scuttling the ships. The seacocks were opened and as the great vessels gradually sank the crews took to the boats and rowed to the land."
