This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of an aerial view of Château-Thierry, the area where in July of 1918, a large battle was held as part of the Second Battle of the Marne. General John Pershing led the American Expeditionary Forces in one of his first actions of the war. The caption writes, "Airplane view of Chateau-Theirry, France, a name that will always be memorable in our annals because of the heroism of American soldiers and marines. The main bridge in the centre is the one destroyed by the enemy in their retreat. At right is the pontoon bridge that was built by the Allies in order to pursue the Germans..."
