1927 Tipped-In Blackmore Tintex Print Jem Mason Brook Aintree Charles Hunt XAL6

This is an original 1927 tipped-in Blackmore Tintex color print of the 1839 Grand Liverpool Steeplechase, which was the first official running of what would later be known as the Grand National. It was held at Aintree Racecourse, and although eighteen runners entered, one dropped out shortly before the event. A point of note is that this race had no handicap, all riders carried twelve stone. This scene depicts the riders at the third brook during the second round, including one rider whose horse took a tumble. The winner was Lottery, ridden by Jem Mason. The original drawing and engraving was done by Charles Hunt, a noted 19th century engraver.

This sporting collection of tipped-in color prints employed a Blackmore Tintex Printing technique, which, at the time, served as a precursor to offset lithography. The method was revolutionary in the color printing industry and produced quality art prints that closely resembled the time and labor-intensive technique of hand colored stone lithographs.
