Quarton was a French illuminator and painter from the late Middle Ages whose work is most representative of the Second School of Avignon. he was perhaps the first to break away from the Italian and Netherlandish styles and define French artistry for painters that followed. After decades of uncertainty, the Pietà of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon is now commonly attributed to him.
