1949 Print Egeskov Castle Funen Denmark 14th Century Renaissance XGH9

This is an original 1949 halftone print of the Egeskov Castle, on the island of Funen in Denmark. This 14th century historic medieval castle is recognized as Europe's best preserved Renaissance water castle. The original structure was erected in 1554 by Frands Brockenhuus. The castle is comprised of two long buildings, which are connected by a thick double wall, which enabled residents to abandon one building and relocate to another during war time. It also contained arrow slits where archers could shoot through, as well as artillery posts and scalding holes, which were used to drop stones and other heavy objects on attackers. The defenders usually fought from the two round corner towers. This castle was also among the first in Europe to utilize indoor plumbing, via a vertical shaft for waste disposal. Behind, the castle sprawling elegant gardens flourished. Today, the rear garden area houses the world's largest bamboo maze. Presently, the Egeskov Castle serves as a museum for vintage automobile collections, vintage motorcycle collections, historical agriculture collections, flying vehicle collections, as well as a collection of Falck and other emergency vehicle types.
