This is an original 1957 color print of an abstract representation of figures wearing cock's comb. In Medieval writings, the organ that was the center of love was the liver and a cock's comb is the fleshy crest of the head of gallinaceous birds (roosters, turkeys). His interpretation is that the painting can be about physical lust as a representation of passion or that being alive is a form of vanity. Arshile Gorky was Armenian but moved to America at the age of 16. He enrolled in the New School of Design in Boston and was influenced by Impressionism, but his work was more postimpressionistic. Later in his career he ventured into Cubism and Surrealism. He was deemed the Father of Abstract Expressionism.
