"Campylopterus Curvipennis"

This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of two members of the Campylopterus Curvipennis family, commonly known as the Wedge-tailed Saberwing Hummingbird. With an average length of 125-137 mm., this bird lives in eastern Mexico, from Tamaulipas to Yucatan, and as far as the lower regions of eastern Guatemala. The crown is metallic violet-blue and the rest of the upper parts are metallic green or bronze. The under parts are gray. There is a small white patch behind the eye, the wings are distinctly curved, and the tail is fan shaped. The pictured orchid is Trichopilia tortilis, known as the Twisted Trichopilia, it has been known to grow from the region of Cordoba and Orizaba, Veracruz, and also from Oaxaca, Chiapas and Central America. It flowers in autumn.
