This is an original 1897 halftone print titled, "Chairing the Member," which alludes to the Oxford election of 1754. A Tory candidate is seen being carried off through the streets on a chair, and is about to fall. To the right, two chimney sweeps are seen urinating onto a bear, and to the bottom left, a family of frightened pigs scurries off to safety.

Period Paper is pleased to offer a collection of photogravures and halftone prints of the paintings of the most notable British artists from William Hogarth to the later Victorian painters. This large collection includes examples, from various schools of painting, of landscape, portrait, genre, and allegorical paintings. A brief, one-page descriptive text about the painting and the artist accompanies each item. Please see both images.
