This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Madrid, Spain (España). The caption writes, "It was built by Philip II in 1563 in honor of St. Lawrence, who is reputed to have been roasted to death on a gridiron. The plan of the palace is that of a gridiron, in memory of the saint's martyrdom. It has thousands of rooms and miles of passages."
