"Toilette de Ville, (1803)."

This is an original 1870 hand-colored copper engraving of the costume of an upper-class mother and child at the time of the Consulate in France, after a work by Philibert-Louis Debucourt. The typical dress of the period had an Empire silhouette -- high-waisted, gathered just under the bust and falling loosely below.

Period Paper is pleased to offer a rare and well-preserved collection of original hand-colored copper engravings, on heavy paper stock, of the historical costumes and fashions of France from the 5th century to the Second French Empire. The work of Pauquet Frres, these engravings include both historical figures as well as historical regional and national dress. Engravings like these are highly collectible not only for their subject matter, but also for their exceptional color saturation and the high quality of the detailed brushwork. Please note that the original copper plate impression is visible on many of these engravings.
