This is an original 1873 black and white double-page wood engraving of a painting by Charles Wynne Nicholls (1831-1903) that portrays a young midshipman in the British Royal Navy being "mast-headed", (a form of naval punishment that allowed officers to sent a sailor to the top of the mast to stay there until the officer decided to let them down), aboard a sailing ship during the Victorian era.
