This is an original 1859 black and white wood engraving of an early anthropological portrait of the "Japanese male and female" originally produced to inform English audiences. This sort of dehumanizing nature was common among European visitors to Japan in the 1800's. Had more information been provided it would have been noted that these were a man and woman of samurai standing in the Edo Period's complex social structure.
