This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by Etienne-Antoine-Eugene Ronjat which depicts Queen Anne of Austria, acting regent for her son, Louis XIV, and her trusted chief minister, Cardinal Mazarin. Between the two of them, the awful uprising of the aristocracy, known as the Second Fronde, was thwarted and power restored to the monarchy. It is unsurprising that many believed these two to be lovers, as they maintained an extremely close professional relationship, even after Anne's regency ended with Louis XIV's coming of age.
