1875 Woodcut Paul Philippoteaux Madame Maintenon Marie Adelaide Court XEA6

This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Paul Philippoteaux which depicts the lively Marie-Adélaïde, Duchess of Burgundy, sitting on the lap of Madame de Maintenon. The Duchess was married to King Louis XIV's eldest grandson, the Grand Dauphin. What her husband lacked in intelligence and humor, she made up for. She had a close relationship with Madame de Maintenon, and was often described as being a breath of fresh air to the dullness of court. Fortunately, she didn't live long enough to see her husband pass, as she died a week before him of measles. Her son went on to be King Louis XV.

Philippoteaux, Paul

Paul Philippoteaux (1846 _ 1923) was a Parisian artist who studied at the Collège Henri-IV and frequented both his father's studio as well as those of other artists. He is most famous for his incredible cycloramas, with his masterpiece being The Battle of Gettysburg, an enormous painting which was not only over one hundred yards long, but weighed over six tons and included items such as trees, fences, and stone walls when it was originally displayed.
