Period Paper is pleased to offer a collection which documents the early twentieth century conditions in the "Far East." At the time, the geographical area of the Pacific was decidedly remote and isolated from a Western perspective, but it was emerging as the site of a great struggle, making the Pacific an arena for the ambitious. The "Great Powers" of the West, specifically the United States, Great Britain, and the Netherlands were coming into increasing conflict with the traditional power of the East, Japan. The collection captures a moment in time prior to the Great War and before the Pacific would explode in the battles of the Second World War.
