This is an original 1877 black and white wood engraving of the Duchess of Orleans and her children whom were left behind in the royal chambers by a fleeing King Louis Philippe. The troops of the French revolutionaries marched in and declared the establishment of the Republic of France. Unlike many nobles of the period, the lives of the Duchess and her children were mercifully spared, while the gold in the palace vaults was not.
