This is an original 1906 black and white intaglio print of Jean Marie Roland, the leader of the Girondist party during the French Revolution. During the Reign of Terror his wife, Madame Roland, was executed. He committed suicide two days later in 1793 by leaning up against a tree and stabbing a cane sword through his heart.
