Maurice Denis
Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was born in Granville, Mance, a town in the Normandy region of France. Early exposure to the sea and coastlines made the subject a favorite and recurring theme in Denis' work. As a painter, Denis was a member of the Symbolist and Nabis movements, and was also a writer, and one of the first artists to insist on the flatness of the picture plane, an idea that would play an important role in the development of Modernism. His later work turned to religious subject matter and murals. Denis played an important role in the evolution of Post-Impressionism in the early twentieth century
