This is an original 1939 tipped-in color print of Peter Ruben's
Chapeau de Paille (
Straw Hat), featuring a rosy-cheeked woman gazing coyly from under a most unique hat. It's pretty obvious that the hat isn't really made of straw; in fact it looks like mostly feathers. However, it is thought that the name came from a mishearing of the French
poil which might refer more to the hairy, fur-like quality the hat possesses. The model is thought to be a woman named Susanna Lunden.
