This is an original 1874 black and white in-text wood engraving of a painting by Charles Soubre (1821-1895) that depicts members of a Dutch noble family standing trial before the special tribunal referred to as the Council of Troubles, (also known as the Council of Blood or Conseil de Sang), that was instituted by Fernando Álvarez de Toledo or "the Iron Duke", 3rd Duke of Alba (1507-1582), who was the governor-general of the Habsburg Netherlands during the Dutch Revolt that was fought against King Philip II of Spain between 1568-1648.

This 139+ year old Item is rated Very Fine ++. Light aging throughout. Light creasing. There is light bleedthrough on this piece from the verso. Light surface rub - left side. Please note: There is printing on the verso.
