This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut which depicts Mathieu Molé, prominent member of the French parliament during the 17th century. He was elected president of the parliament in 1641, and he butted heads with Cardinal Richelieu until Richelieu's death, after which time he was able to secure the release of his friend, the Jansenist Abbot of St. Cyran.
