This is an original 1876 black and white steel engraving that depicts Prince Rupert of the Rhine, Duke of Bavaria, 1st Duke of Cumberland and 1st Earl of Holderness. Despite being German, he was the nephew of King Charles I of England through his parents' marriage. He was a soldier, scientist, colonial governor and part time artist, who helped to shape Canada's political scene but who unfortunately also promoted early slave trade.
