This is an original 1906 black and white print ad for Underwood's Original Deviled Ham. Founded by William Underwood in 1822, in Boston, Massachusetts, the company began glass packaging condiments such as ketchup, mustard, cranberries and more; however, the company changed packaging from glass to steel cans with tin coated interiors due to the Boston-area glassmakers inability to match the cannery's demand. Underwood's canned products were dolled out to the American Civil War troops during the years of 1861 to 1865. In 1868, the brand's red devil logo was created. Today, it is the oldest trademark still in use in the United States. It is estimated that additional meats and seafood were canned by the company during the WWI essential meats conservation movement; thus inspiring the featured canned meat spread.
