Period Paper is pleased to offer a collection of facsimiles of the work of Albrecht Dürer, the preeminent painter-printmaker working in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Printed in 1882, the collection deftly employs three distinct printing methods of the nineteenth century-- original relief line blocks, original line engravings and a wood engraving, each wonderfully interpreting the essence and tone of DürerÕs originals. The collection includes both well known and lesser-known pieces ranging in subject from Biblical scenes to portraits.
Derived directly from the work of Dürer by means of early photography, or expertly executed linear renderings from DürerÕs original work, the majority of the prints featured in the collection are printed in relief line block. This process wonderfully captures the original line quality of DürerÕs pen and silver point drawings, while the nineteenth century linear translations from DürerÕs originals concisely and clearly render DurerÕs original paintings, drawings and prints, offering a unique interpretive gesture. Each piece is printed on a medium weight, lightly coated off-white stock. The most superb examples of the relief line blocks within the collection are the facsimiles of DürerÕs iconic ÒThe Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,Ó the stage proofs of two of his most famous Meisterstiche, or master prints, ÒMelancholiaÓ and ÒThe Knight, Death, and The Devil,Ó and the linear and graphic interpretations of ÒThe Feast of the Rosary, or Rose Garlands,Ó and ÒThe All Saints Picture, or Landauer Altar-Piece.Ó
The original nineteenth century line engravings, which combine both engraving and etching to capture four of DürerÕs notable works, two self-portraits and two pieces depicting Apostles, are superbly achieved. Each image is printed on a slightly heavier weight, uncoated off-white stock, capturing the depth, quality and richness of the line and tone of the original works of art.
The remaining piece in the collection is a skillfully accomplished tinted wood engraving of DürerÕs, ÒHead of an Apostle Looking Downward,Ó a study for ÒThe Assumption.Ó The piece employs a black and a pale pistachio block, capturing the effect of DürerÕs original sketch, in which he employed both black and white ink upon a darkened ground. The piece is printed on a medium weight, uncoated off-white stock.
The collection represents the work of Albrecht Dürer as it was understood, appreciated represented in the nineteenth century. True to the originals in form, content and intent, these pieces are works of art in their own right. Each piece is a unique addition to any collection of Dürer, or appreciator of the history of printing.
