This is an original 1897 black and white wood engraving of a Japanese prisoner being transported by local authorities. Attached his kago (basket) is a plank with kanji (Chinese script) carved into outlining his crimes. People are throwing rice at him as the officials take a break, as was common practice to humiliate the prisoner, however take note of the subtle humor portrayed in the foreground as the ducks eating said rice draw more attention than the prisoner.
