This is an original 1939 tipped-in color print of Nicholaes Maes'
The Idle Servant, depicting a sleeping drudge with an amused housewife motioning at her to the viewer. This type of situation was common in Holland, and after a time it would not have been difficult to see the comedy in such a circumstance. This type of work was intended to be humorous.
