This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure depicting arctic expeditions by Captain Raold Amundsen, who discovered the South Pole in 1912. Shown are members of the expedition on the Aion Island with their trusty dogs, and an image of the schooner Maud frozen in ice. Amundsen suffered from a broken arm and had been attacked by polar bears on this journey, and unfortunately, the schooner was collected as collateral by Amundsen's creditors for all the debt he owed. Amundsen did reach the North Pole in 1925 by flying boats, and was undisputedly the first person to reach both poles.
