This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of a bursting star shell in the area between the trenches in France during World War I. The caption writes, "Both armies, facing each other in trenches only a few hundred feet or yards apart, were constantly on their guard to thwart the attempt or scouting parties to raid their lines, cut the barbed-wire defenses and obtain important information. Frequent star shells, sent high into the air, burst in a blaze of blinding light and made all the territory within its range as bright as day."
