This is an original 1901 black and white halftone print of "Cyanide Works, Angelo Driefontein Mines."

The images of this collection capture a formative period in the development of South Africa, documenting the progress Britain claimed to have made against the Boers in southern Africa, specifically South Africa. In an attempt to provide a testament to the misguided revolt of the Boer opposition to Imperial British colonialism, the images overtly represent unfettered progress and westernization, and at the same time, frequently betray the xenophobic and exploitative nature of colonialism. This process and pursuit was at once important to the British colonies in Africa, and at the same time to the people of the British mainland, as it was promoted as a system to provide assurance and security, thus preserving historical British dominance.
