This is an original 1874 black and white in-text wood engraving of illustrations that depict landscapes, animals, and people from the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition that lasted from 1872-1874 and led to the discovery of the Franz-Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, Barents Sea, and Kara Sea of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. The illustrations include the frozen landscape of Novaya Zemlya, (or Nova Zembla), dead seals on the ice, the Tegetthoff sailing ship stuck in ice, and the portrait of a native Samoyed.
