This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which depicts ten small vignette-esque illustrations from 17th century Holland.

Key Elements in Each Row

First - A new bride sits beside her nuptial bed, adorned with two crowns, listening to whispered advice from her governess, while women that brought her retire from the bedchamber - A sleepless woman lays awake in her bedchamber, feeling guilty of all the beautiful things she has, whilst others who are less fortunate have nothing.

Second - An old married couple sit near each other while they work listlessly on their spinning and whittling. A map on the wall behind them indicates that they weren't always like this, that they had passion and a thirst for adventure once, like most youngsters - A naughty child teeters between two well-dressed women after attempting to reach the coveted hat on the table beside them.

Third - A bizarre dance in which an equal number of men and women perform in a circle while the odd man out walks around them - A small group enjoys a game of Hot Hand, where a victim must hold his hand outstretched behind him, then guess which player tapped it -

Fourth - A young mother tends to the nightly routine of her infant - A interesting lesson in the usefulness of newfangled objects, as the child, in its cool highchair with the feet warmers and the tray, cannot even reach the toys that have fallen.

Fifth - A sneaky devil attempts to con his way past a doorman, who fortunately recognizes the scoundrel. Above the door is a mirror, a simple trick used by those on the first floor to find out exactly who they are allowing into their home - Attempting to test the theory of whether ones tongue sticks to frozen iron, this gentleman suddenly realizes his grave mistake.
