This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which depicts some of the fashions that were popular throughout the department of Landes and the western Pyrenees in 19th century southwestern France. The Lanusquets, shepherds from Landes, primarily used stilts to tend their flock, a tradition for which they later became well known. Made of wood, with a cow-bone support for their feet, they were incredibly quick and could cover long distances with ease. The long rods they carried with them also doubled as a seat when needed. Today, the area is less amenable to shepherds and their flocks, as the region was seeded with trees to prevent the coastline from eroding into the ocean. The woman in the upper right is a fisherman's wife from Biarritz, holding a tiset, or basket.
