This is an original 1891 black and white halftone print of a young woman playing the shamisen (read here as samisen). This stringed instrument was one of the courtly instruments that it was most popular for Geisha to play to entertain their clients. Depending on the era, this was the main course of entertainment by the Geisha, despite popular belief.
