This is an ultra-rare original 1893 rear color cover from the Chicago "The Inter Ocean" Illustrated Supplement showing an image of Old Vienna at the Exposition. Shown is John Botzer's Place, the chapel, the tower and the gateway. The exhibit was offered on the Midway Plaisance, the center of entertainment and amusement at the fair. The Austrian Village occupied a large space and was a reproduction of a portion of Vienna known as 'Der Graben.' The village offered 36 buildings in total, and was located in a space of 195 by 590 feet. Also shown in the village was a collection of antique Greek portraits and artwork which was valued at the time for several hundred thousand dollars.

Period Paper has obtained arguably one of the most rare, exclusive collections of original color images of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (The World's Columbian Exposition). Over the last several years we have acquired and sold thousands of items from this Exposition, and we continue to offer lithographs, prints, and photogravures. However; this exclusive collection is not offered publicly anywhere else. The original front and rear covers from Chicago's coveted The Inter Ocean Illustrated Supplement from 1893 are stunning in their size, color saturation, and condition. This was the very first color supplement produced on a high speed newspaper press, developed in late 1892 in preparation for the Exposition. The Inter Ocean was released 3 times per week at times during the Exposition. Most of the cartoons were produced by a pair at opposite ends of their careers-- Thomas Nast and Art Young. Period Paper holds the largest collection of original 1893 Chicago World's Fair original print ephemera, fine art, and historical images in the world. This is by far the most rare of all the collections related to the fair we have discovered.

The World's Columbian Exposition was held from May to October 1893 in honor of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. In competition with many other cities, Chicago was finally designated the official site and the Exposition was built on 630 acres in and around Jackson Park. It was a spectacular display of progress and prosperity, and included among its many wonders were electrical displays, exhibits from other countries, and a popular amusement area on the Midway Plaisance with carnival rides-- among them the first Ferris Wheel. Most of the fair's architecture was based on classical design which gave the area around the Court of Honor the name "The White City."
