This is an original circa 1901 black and white wood engraving of a painting by Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846) entitled "Curtius Leaping into the Gulf" that portrayed Roman soldier Marcus Curtius throwing himself and his horse in a giant chasm that opened up in the center of ancient Rome. According to the legend, his sacrifice closed the chasm and saved the city.
