This is an original 1903 black and white wood engraving on vellum of a group of Cuna Indians in counsel robes smoking tobacco.

This a wood engraved item from a limited edition collection (470/500), produced in 1903 after the 1699 original edition, which had later been published in French, German and Swedish. The collection is a narrative illustration of Welsh explorer Lionel Wafer's voyage through the Isthmus of Panama, which connects North and South America. Wafer's exploration also includes the Darien region and additional surrounding areas. It was on this adventure that Wafer spent significant amounts of time with the Cuna Indians, learning their culture, history, language, Shamanism beliefs and more.
