This is an original 1922 black and white photogravure of "Napoleon III and his Staff." The image is a reproduction of Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier's original painting of Napoleon III (1866).

Meissonier's original painting, which was completed in the Romantic style, emphasized strong, authentic emotion as a source of aesthetic inspiration. The composition bears a striking resemblance to Meissonier's later painting of "Napoleon and his Staff," completed in 1868; this visual relationship emphasizes a strong connection between Louis-Napoleon III and his uncle, Napoleon Bonaparte I. Simultaneously, the composition is an example of the historic depiction of military leaders: mounted on horseback in full regalia.

The reproduction technique captures the atmospheric and emotional intent of the original and is rendered in rich hues that are darker than the digital image suggests. The image contains beautiful descriptive text and is surrounded by a wonderful plate impression with sharp, ninety degree corners. This image provides the collector an opportunity to purchase an exceedingly rare reproduction of one of Meissonier's lesser-known, but equally competent, works.
