This is an original 1927 tipped-in Blackmore Tintex color print of an 1819 coloured aquatint of "Epsom Races," originally designed by H. Alken and engraved by T. Sutherland. In the image, Mr. Thornhill's Chesnut Colt
Sam, beating Lord Darlington's
Grey, and Sir John Shelly's
Prince Paul for the Derby Stakes, May 28th, 1818.
This sporting collection of tipped-in color prints employed a Blackmore Tintex Printing technique, which, at the time, served as a precursor to offset lithography. The method was revolutionary in the color printing industry and produced quality art prints that closely resembled the time and labor-intensive technique of hand colored stone lithographs.
