Produced with the aquatone process, which employs a photosensitized gelatin and fine halftone screen, each piece deftly and delicately captures the nuanced line and tone of the original etchings, and are exceptionally printed on a white, medium-weight woven stock.
The collection features an individual image of the iconic Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, while the remaining images are comprised of the architecture and cityscapes of various European cities, including Venice and Florence, Italy, Chartres and Amiens, France and Toledo, Spain.
Originating from the hand of one of the foremost American etchers of the time, Ernest D. Roth, these images beautifully capture not merely the physical appearance of these places, but the essential and unique atmosphere of each distinct locale. Roth, Ernest D.
Ernest D. Roth (1879-1964) was a twentieth century German-born American artist primarily working in Europe and America.
Born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1879, Roth, at the age of five, immigrated to the United States with his family. Trained as a painter at the National Academy of Design and the New York School of Art, Roth frequently contributed to exhibitions at the National Academy and the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. His paintings depict American and European cities, characterized by simple, static and depopulated compositions rendered with colorful geometric structure. However, the lack of the human form within, and the geometric structure of, his compositions do not preclude RothÕs work from eliciting a deep and abiding emotional response; an aptitude he fully developed in his etchings and drypoints.
Though beginning his artistic career as a landscape painter working in oils, Roth became considered one of the foremost American etchers of the early twentieth century. His prints retain the same thematic focus as his paintings, but fully exploit the unique capabilities of etching to generate nuanced light, tone, value and line. RothÕs mature work displays a hard-earned and deft style, gaining emotional effect through the discreet selection of subject, the judicious rendering of significant detail and equally judicious elimination of the insignificant. His mature style exhibits absolute control of the process, no longer relying on deep and complex biting of his plates, but employing a painterÕs method of achieving graduated tone, expertly pairing his images with select paper chosen for its own expressive capabilities. The culmination of this mature process was a visual synthesis of subject, style and execution resulting in the poetic union of beauty and brutality.
RothÕs skills as a painter and printmaker earned him numerous awards and accolades. His work is in the permanent collections of prestigious museums throughout the world, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.
