1938 Print Garden Hsuan Tsung Emperor Yang Kuei-Fei Blossom Tree Royalty XAC1

This is an original 1938 halftone print of a Japanese screen titled, "Hsüan Tsung and Yang Kuei-Fei," originally created in the middle of the 17th century. Shown is the emperor and Yang Kuei-Fei in the garden. Attendants are seen playing music and beating drums so that the flowers might bloom faster.

Period Paper is pleased to present a collection of halftone prints featuring Japanese art screens and sliding panels, or fusuma. The original pieces were displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, during the winter of 1935-1936, in order to acquaint the public with Japanese artwork. The exhibition offered pieces from the Ashikaga, Momoyama, Tokugawa and Meiji periods, and featured numerous artists from each time frame. It is an interesting collection and depicts the transformation of Japanese artwork from the 15th to the 20th century.
