This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of a member of the Hylocharsis Eliciae family, more commonly known as the Elicia Golden-Tail Hummingbird. With an average length of 81 mm., the throat and breast is metallic purple, with the sides oft he breast bronze-green and the abdomen dark gray. The beak is reddish with the tip black. Considered a rare species, the Elicia Golden-Tail is found in the low humid regions of Veracrus and Chiapas, as well as Guatemala to Panama. The orchid shown is Epidenderum Cochleatum, more commonly known as the Cockleshell or Clamshell Orchid. Found in Cordoba, Jalapa, Coatepec, and Misantla, in the Mexican state of Veracruz, and flowers in autumn.
